“Building a course that upholds the tradition of the game is a great responsibility.” – Davis Love
That philosophy is certainly exhibited at Shell Landing Golf Course, one of the premier golf facilities on the Gulf Coast. Designed by Love, Shell Landing was recognized in 2002 as one of Golf Digest’s Best New Courses. The January 2003 issue ranked it as the number five Best New Upscale Public course in America – the only top 5 course in that category in the south.
Shell Landing has continued to receive rave reviews throughout the years and is annually ranked among the best courses in the state of Mississippi.
All great golf courses begin with a great piece of property, and that is certainly true with Shell Landing. A combination of rolling topography, tall pines, marshes, bayous, and wetlands make for a scenic and challenging golfing experience.
The fairways are fairly generous, but strategically placed tee shots will allow the player the best chance to attack the large and undulating greens. The beautiful property and masterful design lend themselves to a wide variety of challenging holes.
Each of the five teeing areas is named after a turtle species indigenous to the area. Shell Landing plays 7,024 yards from the back (or Snapping) tees. Leatherback, Hawksbill, Gopherus, and Sea Turtle teeing options are available and range from just over 6,500 yards down to slightly more than 5,000 yards. Pick the right yardage to fit your game and you’ll have an enjoyable and challenging round of golf.
There are a number of holes that are sure to get the golfer’s attention. The “signature” hole is number 17, a par three with a carry over a marsh to a large and undulating green. The hole offers amazing views of the natural wetlands and is a stern test of golf.
Kenny Hughes, CEO & Director of Golf, singles out the par four sixth hole as one of his favorites. “It’s a great par four with a marsh and bayou area, big bunkers a really good green complex. It’s very challenging, but fair.”
Hughes and three business partners purchased Shell Landing and Hickory Hill last fall. Since then, both courses have undergone golf course and capital improvements. One of the most noticeable changes at Shell Landing is the removal of much of the existing underbrush to expose the views of the beautiful bayous. New golf carts, stump removal, and cart path repair projects have also been completed to keep the golfing experience a great one.
Shell Landing offers a 15-acre practice facility, clubhouse, pro shop, and dining room/grill. The professional staff provide first-rate service to make sure that every aspect of your experience is enjoyable and memorable.
Shell Landing is always a great choice for hosting a golf outing. If you’re planning just a small company outing or are planning a full-field tournament Hughes and his team do a terrific job.
Some of the upcoming events at Shell Landing include the always popular Slavic Invitational (September 27-29) and an LSU vs. Alabama Alumni Tournament in November that is sure to be a fun time.
For a great deal, every golfer should consider the Player’s Pass which offers discounted golf at both Shell Landing and Hickory Hill to local residents. The pass is just $75 and your first round is free.
